My Weird School Daze 12-Book Box Set: Books 1-12 by Dan Gutman

My Weird School Daze 12-Book Box Set: Books 1-12 by Dan Gutman is I have to say I have no idea why this series got such positive reviews. I got through half of the first book (barely) and decided there was no way I would read this to my kids. The main character hates school (and lots of other things), there is constant name-calling, stereotyping along gender lines, and adult themes I don't want to have to explain to my 5 year old - or even an older child (e.g. assassination of a president). I hardly ever write reviews, but I felt the need to say something about these books (at least the first one) for those who might share my perspective around what they want to teach and reinforce for their children. I am sure some will believe this is an over-reaction and think the books are fun for kids - and that all the things I mentioned above are just an effort at humor. I get that attempt, and there are some amusing lines, but for me and my family the messages are just too pervasively negative.

My Weird School Daze 12-Book Box Set: Books 1-12 by Dan Gutman is Not sure I want my six-year-old reading this series after reading the books myself first, just to see what all the fuss is about. The protagonist repeatedly announces his hatred for school and demeans his female peers. Additionally, these books are filled with words I wish my son wouldn't say, like "stupid" "dumbhead" "shut-up" etc. etc. I imagine children find the series comical/ entertaining/ likeable, and the books ARE easy to read after all. But I cannot in good conscience endorse them. I want my son to love school and learning, and reading this series will, I fear, give him the exact wrong impression.

My Weird School Daze 12-Book Box Set: Books 1-12 by Dan Gutman is My boys 7 and 9, who are not big readers, LOVE this series. We use these books for our read aloud time (parents read to kids). They beg me to read more. My 9 year old could read the series himself. My 9 year old only liked non-fiction until this series. The stories are unexpected. The series is not for those who are cautious with the word "hate". A.J., the main character, hates a lot of things, but the unusual story perspective really is a winner in my house. You might find it helpful to know that this author has 2 other series, specials, and a future series with the same characters. I was confused when I ordered this set compared to the 21 book set. I didn't realize they were different series with the same characters. For the record, I will be purchasing all the books in the following series for my kids.My Weird School (21 books -- set is available on Amazon)My Weird School Daze (12 books -- the set I'm writing the review for)My Weirder School (12 books -- the books are currently available individually on Amazon but not as a set)My Weird School Special (a few books about holidays, some are yet to be published, I don't think this is a series name)My Weirdest School (set to start being released in 2015 according to Wiki)

My Weird School Daze 12-Book Box Set: Books 1-12 by Dan Gutman is I have struggled with my 8 year old for the past couple of years with reading. An A student who hates reading. I could only see potential hazards ahead. I really wanted to show her that reading could be fun. We had read 3 books from these Weird school series and I decided to buy this box set. I convinced her that reading in the car during our 20 minute commute to and from school would replace the 30 minutes reading at home in the evening. The first few days were a struggle, but soon, we would get in the car and she would pick up the books on her own. We would laugh and talk about the characters and guess about what we would think might happen next. Soon, she was bringing the books inside. And to my surprise this week, when we were sitting and waiting for an appointment, I handed her my cell phone to keep her "busy".... but to my surprise, she handed the phone back to me and pulled out one of these books to read while we waited. Later, she caught me up on what happened in the book and then we speculated about what will happen next. I have tears in my eyes. I always enjoyed reading. I certainly hope this momentum continues. Thanks so much Dan.
